1944: After the battle of Saipan, administration remained under the control of the U.S. Navy.
1952: The Naval Technical Training Unit and the CIA created training bases in Saipan.
1962: Administration of the Marianas was given to civilian authority and Saipan became the headquarters for the entire Trust Territory government.
1964: President Johnson created the Congress of Micronesia and the first session took place in Saipan the following year.
1978: Commonwealth status and U.S. citizenship were given. Financial assistance from the United States created an economic boom for Saipan. The garment industry began because Saipan had cheap labor and duty-free export of goods to the United States.
1980: The tourism industry began.
