Saipan is a rather small island with a long history. From being one of the earliest settled archipelagos in the Micronesian area 3500 years ago to today, Saipan has been controlled by four super powers: Spanish, German, Japanese, and American. The wedding picture was of my Father (Ambrosio Torres Shimizu) and Mother (Ruth Palomo San Nicolas - Shimizu), taken in Hagatna, Guam on December 1936. I'm not sure how it made it into your Saipan collection of photos.
My Grandfather (my Father's Father) was Japanese, Jose Katsuji Shimizu (1873-1944), and he lived in Saipan for some years before moving his business entreprise to Guam. Grandfather JKS did marry a Saipanese woman (first wife) and had two sons (half-brothers of my Father, ATS) before relocating to Guam shortly after his first wife died of unknown (at least to me) cause. I believe that this would be the connection for my parent's wedding picture showing up in your Saipan photo collection. JKS' second wife (my Grandmother) in Guam was Concepcion Martinez Torres - Shimizu) and my Father ATS was the youngest of four siblings.
I found your pictorial history of Saipan very interesting and parallels rather closely some historical pictures of Guam taken during the time periods in your outline. Thank you for sharing.
